Lyrical ballet Costumes

Are you trying to decide on the right ballet costume for yourself or a loved one?  Sorting through the melee and trying to figure out which dance costume to go with what, may not be so simple.  Do you go with a simple ballet tutu, leotard, corset or mix and match them together to make a combination of all three. Let’s try and figure out together what you may be looking for.

Basically, sets start by putting the two different types of costumes into two categories. The first category is lyrical ballet, and the second is classical ballet.

Classical Ballet

The first type of ballet dance costume is a classical ballet costume. Let me first just start by saying the concepts of the outfits are not clear cut; not black and white.  They are mostly left up to interpretation.  Usually the classical costumes use Pointe shoes, however are not bound by this aspect. The outfits ballet dancers costumethemselves are usually romantic tutus or classical tutus for the ladies, and for the mend, a unitard or some kind or attire matching the theme of the lady’s tutu.

Lyrical Ballet

The second type of ballet dance costume is a lyrical ballet costume. As per the classical outfit, the rules of the genre are not set in stone and can change depending on the choreographer. The lyrical costumes do use point shoes occasionally however this is not commonplace. Lyrical ballet usually uses different types of dresses which float and flow with the performance piece. The men can either wear a unitard or may sometimes just wear some short pant, but no top.

I wouldn’t just run off and buy the first adult’s or childrenss ballet costume you like just because you are now that little bit wiser, however.  If you do like a certain costume, perhaps you might take a photograph or describe it to the dance coordinator or chorographer, whomever is directing the piece at the time.

Consulting with the creator of the piece is the best way to guarantee a perfect ballet performance.
