Pointe shoes and Pointe shoe fitting are essential to a ballerina’s success onstage. It gives her the right tool to execute her routines in sylph like movements giving the appearance of weightlessness. Pointe shoes are not for everyone either, even for the ballet dance students. Not all of the students of ballet can wear, or are allowed to wear the Pointe shoes of ballet. Pointe shoes are for the most advance of ballet dancers, they who have earned the rank through hard work, years of practice and an iron clad self discipline. Pointe work is risky for ballet dancers who lack the skills and physical strength to do the footwork right.

The length of the shoes must be right and fit the length of the ballet dancer’s feet. Pointe shoes are worn to dance on the tips of the toes and proper fit is essential. The foot must be snugly fitted on to the ballet shoes and comfortably in contact with the shoe box to further reduce injury. Pointe work is hard on the toes and leg, that improper Pointe shoe fitting can most often lead to injuries of the ballet dancer who is wearing the poorly fitted Pointe shoes.

The use of Demi-Pointe shoes for at least three months will give the essential experience needed to prepare a ballet dancer’s legs, feet and toes for Pointe work. Demi-Pointe shoes are ballet shoes designed for the easy transition from basic footwork to the much more advanced Pointe work. They will give you the fit and feel of real Pointe shoes and will give you a little discomfort compared to wearing real Pointe shoes. Pointe shoes have shanks on them, while Demi-Pointe shoes don’t, allowing the dancer to dance while not in pointe. Theses shoes are very essential in training for Pointe footwork and should be used by an aspiring ballet dancer before moving on to Pointe shoe fitting.

You must remember that Pointe shoe fitting is not an easy thing to do, and it might as well take more than an hour to find the proper Pointe shoes for your feet, and you might have to go through several stores to find them. Don’t be too hasty in buying your pair of Pointe shoes, you don’t want to end up with a pair of ill fitted shoes that would only hurt and injure feet. Finding and using the right pair of Pointe shoes is important not only to your ballet performance, but also in being able to use your feet outside the ballet world.
